Lots of trails for every stage of rider. Several different picnic spots. Loading ramp.the road getting to the unloading area is narrow and winding. Park ranger will be out sometimes, not often though.
If you’re looking for a place that truly captures the beauty and freedom of the outdoors, South Cow Mountain is an absolute gem. The views are incredible, with rolling hills and wide-open landscapes that make every visit feel like an adventure.
Whether you’re out riding, hiking, or just taking in the scenery, this spot delivers. The trails are well laid out, offering something for all skill levels, and there’s plenty of space to explore without feeling crowded.
What really stands out is the peacefulness—you can disconnect, breathe, and just enjoy nature at its best. Perfect place to bring friends, family, or even go solo to reset.
Highly recommend for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants a solid, memorable experience. I’ll definitely be back!
Called BLM office the evening before (12/16) going to So. Cow mtn to make sure gate was going to be open. My son and I arrived around 6am (12/17), passed thru the open gate and drove around to scout pig and deer. It had rained overnight and there was a fine mist keeping everything moist. The road was fine in the beginning with standing water in a few places. As it became steeper it became very slippery and difficult to drive. We were in a 4 wheel drive 3/4 ton pickup truck with all terrain tires. At one point we slid off the road and managed to get out of trouble with great effort.
After making it back to the gate we found it to be closed and had to hike to a cell service point, call the BLM office and ask to have the gate opened. That was a 2 hour wait.
It will be a long time before a 4 wheel drive vehicle will be able to go thru So. Cow mtn due to the clay type soil of the roads and wet conditions causing it to be very slick.
We did see a few deer but no pigs.
So Cow Mountain is a lot of fun but it’s not a joke. If you can avoid it don’t go out there alone. Pay attention to the ratings on the trails. Make sure that you are properly equipped with a winch and recovery gear. If you insist on exploring trails 23 and 25 make sure you have at least one other vehicle with you.
Great place to camp and play. The dirt road to the red mountain campground can get a little rough, 4WD is recommended, especially if you’re towing. Non 4wd can make it, just much much slower. Campground has vault toilets, tables and fire pits and trash cans. It is well maintained and popular with the OHV/ATV enthusiasts. Tons of trails to ride on, and a few neat features, like a safety obstacle course and a warm up loop. North Cow mountain has a rifle range so some shots are heard while camping here. Fun place to be.
