Camped here over the weekend and had a great time. There is definitely evidence of horses everywhere, manure is prevalent. Better than dog poop! It was surprisingly quiet for how close to the road it was, and I was majorly concerned when we got there that I would be plagued all night by the sound of passing cars. The little creek nearby was great for cooling off and the stars at night were stunning. We didnt see much wildlife but a GIANT rattlesnake slithered right through our camp one day, in the middle of our cornhole game. He was nice enough to give us a warning rattle as he approached and went by as quickly as possible but I still nearly shat myself because my 1yo was standing next to me and I am pregnant. I am honestly surprised that was the only rattler we saw, with all the tall grass and how hot it was I expected to encounter more. I was on the lookout the whole time but this guy still surprised me. We will be going back before the end of summer ☀️
This is a free camp site run by the BLM on hwy. 16, and right on the edge of The Berreyessa-Snow Mountain National Monument. There are quite a few sites sitting in a grassy field surrounded by oak and pine covered hills with Bear Creek meandering close by. There are two out houses close by. It was nice and quiet with birds singing and elk bugleing in the distance. The dogs loved it too.
Lots of Star Thistles and little shade. Bear Creek runs along the site and offers some swimming possibilities, although other nearby swimming holes are better. But the place is free to camp, has pit toilets, and is a remarkably quiet and pleasant place to spend the evening.

A beautiful place to camp for a night. Very quiet, tons of stars, and we got to see two different herds of Tule elk in the evening.

The camping is free and feels safe. We stayed for one night, in the lower part.
